Jamaica Airport Transfers: Sangster (MBJ) and Norman Manley (KIN)

Jamaica has two international airports, and which one you fly into determines a great deal about your trip. Choosing wrong can add two to four hours of driving before you reach your hotel.

This guide covers both — the journey times to every major destination, the transfer options available, and where visitors most commonly overpay.

Which airport?

Sangster International (MBJ), Montego Bay — the island's busiest airport and the right choice for Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, Falmouth and the whole north-coast resort corridor. Most tourist traffic lands here.

Norman Manley International (KIN), Kingston — out on the Palisadoes strip, and the right choice for Kingston, Portmore, Spanish Town, the Blue Mountains and Port Antonio. More business and diaspora traffic than resort traffic.

All of these move with traffic. The Kingston times in particular can stretch considerably at peak, when Harbour View and the Mandela Highway corridor back up.

Your transfer options

1. Pre-booked resort transfer

If you are staying at an all-inclusive, a transfer is very likely bundled into your package or bookable through the resort. These are comfortable and predictable, and for a long run like Montego Bay to Negril they remove all the uncertainty.

The trade-off is rigidity: they run to a schedule built around flight arrivals, which can mean waiting for a full shuttle, and they only serve the airport-to-resort leg. They will not take you to dinner in the West End three nights later.

2. Charter taxi at the airport

Licensed charter taxis wait outside arrivals at both airports. They will take you door to door, and the fare is negotiated, not metered.

This is where most visitors have their worst transport experience in Jamaica, and it is not because drivers are dishonest — it is structural. You have just landed, you do not know the distances, you have no reference price, you have luggage, and you are making a decision under time pressure. That is a bad position to negotiate from.

Look for the red PPV plates that mark a licensed public passenger vehicle, and agree the total out loud before the car moves. Not the rate, not the zone — the number you will hand over.

3. Route taxis

Cheap and plentiful, but shared and running fixed corridors. Realistic if you are travelling light and heading somewhere on a main route. Not realistic with three suitcases and a resort address off the highway.

4. Car rental

Both airports have rental desks. Worth considering if you are planning to move around the island independently — but Jamaica drives on the left, road quality varies outside the main corridors, and Kingston traffic is demanding. It is not a gentle introduction after a long flight.

5. Drift, from October 1, 2026

Drift launches for riders on October 1, 2026, covering transfers from both airports. The difference from a charter taxi is that the negotiation disappears: you enter your destination, the app shows the fare in Jamaican dollars calculated on distance and time, and you accept or you do not. Payment comes off the card already saved on your account.

Set the app up before you fly and there is nothing to do on arrival but enter your hotel.

The transfers worth planning ahead

Montego Bay → Negril

Ninety minutes along the coast road through Lucea. Long enough that arranging it at the kerb after a flight is a genuinely expensive way to do it. This is the single most-booked long transfer in western Jamaica, and it is worth having sorted before you land. See the Negril page.

Montego Bay → Ocho Rios

About two hours east on the north coast highway. Common for cruise passengers joining a ship and for guests at the Ocho Rios resorts. See the Ocho Rios page.

Norman Manley → New Kingston

Thirty to forty minutes across the Palisadoes strip and through Harbour View. Short, but heavily traffic-dependent — allow more time on a weekday evening. See the Kingston page.

Kingston ↔ Montego Bay

Three and a half to four hours by road. If your itinerary involves both ends of the island, check whether a domestic flight or simply flying into the right airport in the first place saves you the day.

Practical tips

• Match your airport to your destination. The single biggest avoidable cost in Jamaican travel is landing at the wrong one.
• Agree fares before the trip starts, every time, for every charter.
• Ask your hotel what a transfer should cost before you go looking for a car. A reference number changes the conversation entirely.
• Use licensed vehicles — red PPV plates. Avoid unmarked cars offering rides at arrivals.
• Carry some Jamaican dollars for cash-only options, though Drift is card-only in the app.
• Build in traffic margin for departures, particularly out of Kingston.

Is there Uber at Montego Bay airport?

Yes. Uber operates in Montego Bay and Kingston, so you can request a ride at or near Sangster. Driver availability varies with the time of day and the flight bank, and coverage thins once you leave the two main cities — which is why licensed charter taxis and pre-booked resort transfers are still the norm for the north-coast resorts. Lyft does not operate in Jamaica. From October 1, 2026 you can also book a Drift with the fare shown upfront.

What transportation is available at Jamaican airports?

How much should I budget for airport transfers in Jamaica?

It varies enormously by distance and by how the fare is arranged — a ten-minute run to the Hip Strip and a ninety-minute run to Negril are completely different propositions. Ask your hotel for a reference figure, and from October 2026 you can simply check the fare in the Drift app before booking.

Can I book an airport transfer in advance with Drift?
